Update on Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) During COVID-19

We are delighted to report that as from 1 November 2020, the South African Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) has appointed a new Senior Manager: Patents and Designs in South Africa, Dr Mavis Nyatlo. Dr Nyatlo has succeeded the previous manager Mr Trod Lehong who did an excellent job in improving efficiencies and implementing electronic filing at the Patent Office.

Although CIPC is open with all services available, it is currently running at essential and limited staff capacity. There have not been any new infections at CIPC which has allowed a significant amount of output from the Registry.

It is important to note that the Patent Office has an electronic filing system for all initial filings. All belated submissions are required to be filed in hard copy for which a drop-box system has been created. This is to ensure that the documents are received timeously even though there is limited capacity at the office. While output in processing these documents was reduced pre COVID, we have seen an increase in the last two weeks.
