Secretarial Training Academy
At Adams & Adams we are proud of our Secretarial Training Academy. It embodies our belief that we are more than just a business, we are an enterprise, where excellence in work goes hand in hand with the value we place in people. The Academy was created in the year 2000 to uplift and empower previously disadvantaged people through high quality training and workplace skills as secretaries.
Although the structure of the course has changed since its inception, the aim is always to provide the best possible training to enable these candidates to be immediately employable at the end of the training in any secretarial position. Only eight to twelve candidates are selected annually after passing a thorough computer, keyboarding, and linguistic skills test.
The Academy is currently accredited by the Services SETA under registration number 12842, for the Further Education and Training Certificate: Business Administration Services qualification (SAQA ID 61595 LP35928) on NQF Level 4.
The course runs for a period of one year from 1 March to 28 February the next year, with a mid-year exam and a stringent final exam. The training starts in the training room every morning before lunch, with practical training after lunch in the following departments: Patents, Trade Marks, Commercial and Conveyancing.
During the first five to six months typing/keyboarding skills are developed, with an introduction to the legal environment and working life in general. Only those trainees who have excelled during this phase will be able to continue with Phase II, which is more advanced and prepares the trainees for the work environment, concentrating on typing speed, advanced audio typing, internal systems training, spreadsheets and presentations, as well as other essential secretarial skills, such as proficient note-taking, writing letters and memos, taking initiative and responsibility, and preparing all kinds of relevant correspondence.

Please be advised that this is a 12-month full-time “hands-on” course and can be very demanding both mentally and physically. Mental strength is required to pay attention during theory training sessions, as well as to learn during practical training, while at the same time learning to type can be physically demanding to get the correct posture and habits to be efficient and productive. For example, classes in the morning are followed by work in various departments in the afternoon. Not only are you expected to learn a lot, but you are also interacting with people in a professional environment across a broad range of topics. See the sections ‘How do we do it?’ and ‘What is the course content?’ for more details.
