Use of the ARIPO (African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation) system is on the rise and there have positive developments within the organisation, according to the 2022 statistics and highlights which it announced recently.

2022 ARIPO Highlights

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) has announced that it is on a positive trajectory and posted some of the following highlights from 2022:

  • Industrial Property applications had increased by 26% by the end of November 2022;
  • compared to 2021, revenue generation grew by about 20%. Collections up to 30 November 2022 surpassed the organisation’s target by 31%;
  • ARIPO membership increased to 22 member states following the deposit of the instrument of accession by the Republic of Cape Verde, effective on 14 July 2022;
  • strategic partnerships with organisations such as WIPO, Japan Patent Office (JPO), European Patent Office (EPO), and the EUIPO, under the auspices of the AfrIPI project, have allowed member states to maximise social-economic growth;
  • achievements included the inaugural Conference of Heads of IP Offices (HIPOC) held in the Kingdom of Eswatini with the support of WIPO from 8 to 10 June 2022; and activities undertaken under the Intellectual Property Rights & Innovation in Africa project (AfrIPI) funded by the EU and implemented by the EUIPO;
  • ARIPO operations were streamlined into an effective and efficient system.

With these successes, the aim for 2023 is to shift the focus from austerity to driving ARIPO’s Strategic Plan.
