A new framework for IP-backed finance in Nigeria
Nigeria is taking steps to make intellectual property a more commercially usable financial asset. On 5 August 2026, the Federal Government unveiled a Comprehensive Framework for the Development of IP Commercialisation and Securitisation for the Creative Industry, developed through the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy with support from the Afreximbank project on improving IP protection in Nigeria. The framework seeks to establish mechanisms through which IP assets can support lending, investment and other financing transactions, particularly within Nigeria’s creative and digital economy. The initiative could strengthen the commercial value of copyright, trade marks and other IP assets by providing a framework for their valuation, commercialisation and use in financing.
