Adams & Adams Visits Madagascar
Adams & Adams Partners, Simon Brown, Nthabi Phaswana, Godfrey Budeli and Africa Practice Manager, Menzi Maboyi, travelled to Antananarivo, Madagascar from 24 – 26 September 2025. The primary purpose of the trip was to meet with our local partners, visit the offices of OMAPI (Office Malgachede La Propriété Industrielle) and to hold anti-counterfeit training with members of the Madagascan Customs and police.
Upon arrival we were made aware of the planned demonstrations in Antanararivo that were set to take place during the time of our trip. We were, however, able to meet our trip objectives.
We met with the Director General (DG) of OMAPI, Mrs Oby Naharisoa Rafanotsimiva, and members of her executive team comprising of the Head of TM: Mrs Sendra RAVONIARIJAONA, the Head of Patents & Design, Mrs Niriana Hanta RAHARIVELO, and the Technical Director & Head of Promotion of Innovation, Mr Narisoa RABENJA.
We were well received and were able to hold wide ranging discussions on Registry practices and the need for certainty in the filing process and formalities. Outstanding matters were also raised with the Registry. We were advised of a process currently underway to amend IP legislation which was at an advanced stage. Overall, the visit was a success with sharing of ideas and best practices. Also emphasised the need for continued collaboration in promoting IP in Madagascar.
