In August, we were invited by one of our local partner firms in Tanzania, Stallion Attorneys, to participate in a one day IP training seminar, in Zanzibar, organized in conjunction with the Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA). The theme of the seminar was Emerging Issues in IP Law. Lita Qamata-Miti was one of the speakers on the day and her topic was Global Trends in Registration, Protection and Enforcement of Intellectual Property. Her presentation was well received by the delegates who comprised BPRA staff members and local attorneys. Other notable presenters included Mr Mustafa Haji, the Head of the IP Dept at BPRA, and Alkarim Hakim, a partner at Stallion Attorney’s Zanzibar office.

We also had the opportunity to visit the BPRA offices to meet with Mr Rashid M. Othman, the Acting Executive Director and his team. Constructive discussions were held on the Registry’s operations including their digitisation programme. There was a general sense of enthusiasm within the team and Adams & Adams was invited to conduct further workshops in the coming year.

We took the opportunity to also visit Akiplaw, our Associate Office in Tanzania, other local partner firms and the Business Registrations and Licencing Agency (BRELA) where we met with Ms Loy Mhandu, the Deputy Registrar and her team.
