The new Copyright Fund in Malawi

The Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) has taken advantage of Section 98 of the Copyright Act of 2016 and has established the Copyright Fund after the expiry of the Cultural Support Scheme, which was previously administered by COSOMA on behalf of the Royal Norwegian Embassy.

The main objectives of the Copyright Fund include the enforcement of Copyright law, enhancing public education, creating awareness of copyright matters, assisting in anti-piracy campaigns and activities, and the conservation, preservation, and promotion of Malawian culture within copyright.

The Copyright Fund will be administered in accordance with the Public Audit Act and the Public Finance Management Act. The funding will be financed through, amongst others, levies on performances, sound recordings, broadcasts, and typographic arrangements, importing, manufacturing or placing of devices for digital storage materials on the market.

It is believed that the Copyright Fund will assist Malawian artists, and will in turn also help promote tourism and boost the economy in Malawi.
