Published Date: October 14, 2022

Ms Lorreta Asiedu, a senior counsellor of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), recently led a delegation in Nigeria to visit Abubakar Malami, the Minister for Justice and Attorney General of the Federation.

The purpose of the visit was to seek the Minister’s support on WIPO’S efforts in developing and adopting the National IP Policy and Strategy for Nigeria, thereby resulting in the modernisation of the entire IP system in Nigeria, including legislative changes to the Trade Marks Act, as well as the Patent and Design Act.

In adopting the proposed strategy, Nigeria joins other territories on the continent with similar strategies. The focus will be, amongst other issues, developing the IP potential of the youth and encouraging entrepreneurs to also commit to the National IP Policy and Strategy. In addition to focussing on the legislative framework of the territory, WIPO intends on extending its reach to universities and other research institutions.
