Published Date: August 18, 2022

On 29 July 2022, the National Assembly passed the Copyright Bill. This follows the passing of the Bill by the House of Representatives on 27 July 2022 and the Senate on 6 April 2022.

The new Bill provides for the effective regulation, protection and administration of copyright in the digital economy in line with best practices.

The Bill, which has been described as a catalyst for revamping Nigeria’s creative economy, seeks to strengthen the copyright regime in Nigeria, facilitate Nigeria’s compliance with obligations arising from international treaties and enhance the capacity of the Copyright Commission for effective administration and enforcement of the provisions of the Copyright Act. It prohibits online duplication and unauthorised rebroadcasting, and performers of audio or visual works that are posted on social media platforms will have enjoy protection from rebroadcasting too.
