Pieter Visagie

Pieter’s practice has for almost two decades focused on the drafting of patent specifications and the filing and prosecution of patent applications both locally and abroad.

In this field of legal practice, Pieter has, and continues to gain, extensive exposure to and experience in the prosecution practices of the patent offices of most major foreign jurisdictions, including the United States Patent Office, the European Patent Office, the Chinese Patent Office, the Japanese Patent Office, the Australian Patent Office, etc. Pieter also deals with the preparation and filing of design applications.

Technology areas in which Pieter has experience, including for prominent local and multinational companies, include catalyst technologies, decarbonisation, hydrogen manufacture, mining technologies, water treatment, hydrometallurgy, radiopharmaceuticals, fluorine chemistry, applied polymer chemistry, adhesives, and a variety of other applied chemistry and chemical engineering technologies.

More recently, over the course of the past 5 years, the Pieter’s practice has also developed into other areas of work, including assisting clients with their intellectual property protection, management and risk-identification strategies, conducting intellectual property due diligence investigations, and advising clients on technology transfer, licensing, and technology development transactions.

Pieter has a strong focus on providing holistic and comprehensive, business-focused advice to clients, mindful of their short, medium, and long-term interests. In this regard, Pieter often leverages the multidisciplinary diversity of Adams & Adams’s practice by involving colleagues practising commercial law in intellectual property matters.
