ARIPO – CELEBRATING AFRICA COPYRIGHT AND COLLECTIVE MANAGEMENT DAY

Africa Copyright and Collective Management Day is celebrated yearly on 14 September to raise awareness of Copyright and Collective Management Rights in Africa.

The day was established by the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) Member States Collective Management Organizations, in collaboration with its partners, such as the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC), at a meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 2017.

At this year’s celebration, the Director General of ARIPO, Bemanya Twebaze welcomed participants, including the Zimbabwe Council of Copyright Owners, at the event, which was conducted in collaboration with the Office of the Registrar of Deeds, Companies, and Intellectual Property (CIPZ) and the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA).

Twebaze remarked that the “borderless nature” and globalisation of the internet provide both opportunities and challenges for creators. He acknowledged the creative industry’s contribution to the economy in the region and reaffirmed ARIPO’s strong commitment to the development of Intellectual Property Rights in its member states and Africa as a whole.
